Over the last 15 years, Semaglutide, in a class of medications called GLP-1 agonists, like Ozempic, Wegovy, Trulicity, Victoza, and similarly Mounjaro, has been used to treat type 2 diabetes. Its use has recently been approved by the FDA to help manage weight loss (along with diet and exercise) in overweight or obese adults with additional risk factors.
Semaglutide is injected under the skin, once weekly at any time of day, with or without food, and should be injected on the same day each week.
Semaglutide is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal symptoms, often due to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Although semaglutide by itself usually does not cause hypoglycemia, blood sugar can be affected by other factors, so it is important to drink lots of water and not skip meals.
